switching from a old router to the new one.

I have a old MI424-WR router that is connected to a Coax cable. Thats how i get my internet. Im planning to get the new Fios quantam gateway router. do i just easily switch the cable from the old to the new or do I have to release the old router on my network settings and then plug in the new router after the "release" step is done? i want to know the proper steps.
